For years, I’ve been a horrible gardener. Most springs, I plant a few things, and then sit back to wait for them to dry up and die, hoping I’ll savage a little bit of fruit before it happens. So, when I saw “How to grow green onions” off some clip on Pinterest.com, I had to try. (The original article is here.)
First off, come up with a recipe that calls for green onions. I chose onion dip to take to a friends party. It’s awesome, and better than any thing calling for a package of onion soup mix. I happened to get as fresh of onions as possible at the store, grabbing them off the cart as the produce guy was unloading them. Given that they are of unknown origin, I’ll probably go get some organic ones from Whole Foods at some point.
Cut the onions down to the white part. Dice up the greens and do whatever you need to with them per your recipe. Toss the bulbs in a jar filled with water.
Next, the easier part…waiting. Top off the water every day or two. The remains of the green part will die, and new shoots will start popping up. You’ll also see the roots starting to grow.
Continue waiting. In a couple of weeks, you’ll have the same problem I have; more green onions than you know what to do with. I’ve been cutting mine down with scissors, and putting them in a baggy in the fridge, where they’ll keep for a while, long enough for the cycle to repeat.
It’s awesome! I’m now a successful gardener. The only problem I have now is what to do with all of the onions. I can’t just make onion dip every day…
Inspired by this, I’ve again planted tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and other stuff…we’ll see how it goes.
